Brandubh

A small Irish cousin of chess, on seven squares by seven. Heiðrún plays the other side and takes her time.

Rules

The board is 7×7. Attackers move first.
Every piece moves like a rook: any distance in a straight line, without jumping.
Only the king may stop on the throne (centre) or on a corner. Other pieces may pass over the empty throne.
A piece is captured when the enemy sandwiches it between two pieces on a line. Corners and the empty throne count as enemies to everyone; the occupied throne counts against attackers only. Moving between two enemies is safe. The king may help capture.
The king falls to two attackers when he is away from the throne, to four when he sits on it, and to three when he stands next to it.
Defenders win when the king reaches a corner; attackers win when the king is captured. A side with no legal move loses. A third repetition of a position, or 200 moves, is a draw.
